Fearfully And Wonderfully Made Before Anything

This message is for a woman who deletes and forgets everything good she has made and can recite every failure in order

She can list them.

Not vaguely. In order, with dates, with what went wrong and roughly what it cost. There are eleven of them and she could take you through all eleven in about four minutes and she would not need to think.

Now ask her about the good ones.

She will pause, and then say something general, and then she will actually struggle, and if you press her she will name two or three and describe them badly and quickly move on. And these are not obscure. Some of them are things people still use. One of them is the reason she has the position she has.

She does not remember them.

It is not modesty. She is not performing. The information genuinely is not held in the same way: the failures are catalogued and the successes are somewhere in a fog, and if you asked her to explain the difference she would say that the failures taught her something, which is true, and which does not explain why the other kind evaporated.

She has a shelf of finished things and she does not look at it. She could not tell you when she last did.

You may have your own list of eleven. And you may find, if you actually try it, that the other list does not come.

Fearfully And Wonderfully Made Before Anything

What was made first

Here is a verse people quote about themselves, and I want you to read it with attention to what it is about.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.Psalm 139:14

Marvelous are thy works.

And the work in view, in that whole psalm, is not a thing the writer produced. It is the writer. The chapter is about being formed, knitted together, seen in secret, written in a book before there was a single day of anything.

So the first made thing in your life was not made by you.

That matters for what has happened to your memory, and I want to be careful here because I do not think your memory is a fault to be repented of.

You are yourself a work that was made before you had made anything at all. Psalm 139:14 calls the person the marvelous work and puts the making before any output whatsoever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman who cannot hold her own successes stand on one she did not have to produce.

Now, about the eleven.

I am not going to tell you to stop caring about them or that they do not matter. Some of them cost people something and you know exactly what and you should not be talked out of that. And I am not going to treat your standards as a fault, because they are not one and they are part of why the good ones are good.

But look at what has actually happened to the record. You are keeping an account of your work with a rule in it: failures are stored with full detail, successes are released within about a fortnight. Any book kept that way will show a loss every single year, no matter what actually happened.

You are working from an account that only ever records one kind of entry. The written word calls the person themselves the marvelous work, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been deleting the good ones out of your record.

The honest half: this is not going to be fixed by trying to remember harder. You have almost certainly tried and it does not work, because the rule is in the storing rather than in the recall.

What can be done is to put one good thing outside your own memory, where it does not depend on you holding it. On a shelf, in the room, in your line of sight. That is not sentimentality. It is putting an entry somewhere the rule cannot reach.

The breakthrough

The rule is in the storing, not in you.

You have not been failing to be grateful and you have not been fishing. A rule got into how the record is kept, probably very early, and it has been quietly deleting one kind of entry for years, and no amount of good intention reaches something that operates before recall.

You are a work God calls marvelous, and that entry was made before you produced anything and cannot be deleted. Scripture puts the person in the place of the marvelous work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a record for a woman whose own record has a hole in it.

So the eleven stay, because some of them should. And one good one gets put where the rule cannot get at it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in front of the shelf. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given to you rather than earned, which is why a woman who cannot name four of her own good pieces can speak with complete footing tonight. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and what the record actually says is His to decide.

  1. Rule that keeps only the failures, you are not an honest account of my work. Scripture calls the person themselves the marvelous work, and you have been showing me a loss every year no matter what actually happened.
  2. Fog where the good ones should be, in the name of Jesus you lift. The written word says I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been deleting entries out of my own record for twenty years.
  3. Lord, I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that was finished before I made one thing. I thank You that Psalm 139:14 makes the first work in my life Yours and not mine, and I am naming one good thing now and putting it where I can see it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
