Greater Than Our Heart

This message is for a man who has confessed it, been forgiven, believes it, and still feels condemned every time it comes to mind

He believes it. That is what makes this so odd.

He has confessed the thing, properly, to God and to the people. He has read the verses and he understands them and if you asked him whether he is forgiven he would say yes without any hesitation, and he would not be performing.

And every time it comes to mind, something in him passes a sentence.

Not words exactly. It arrives faster than words. A drop, a kind of sinking, and underneath it a verdict about the kind of man he is, delivered instantly, by something inside him that appears to have full authority and to be entirely unimpressed by anything he believes.

He has argued with it. Arguing does not work, because it is not making an argument, it is issuing a finding.

And what has started to worry him is this: he cannot tell which of the two is the more reliable witness. The belief is a thing he holds. The verdict is a thing he feels, and feelings have a way of seeming more honest than beliefs, especially the unflattering ones, especially in a man who distrusts anything comfortable.

So he has ended up in a position where the harshest voice available is the one he half suspects is telling the truth.

You may know that gate. Something settled, believed, and a sentence passed inside you every time it comes to mind, by something you cannot argue with.

Greater Than Our Heart

Greater than the heart

Here is a verse written by a man who clearly knew people like you, and it addresses the exact mechanism.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.1 John 3:20

If our heart condemn us.

He does not say if your heart is wrong, or if you feel bad. He uses the legal word again. Condemn. He is describing the thing you experience: an internal court, handing down a finding, on its own authority.

And he does not tell you to argue with it. Notice that. He does not offer you a technique for reasoning with the heart.

He puts something above it. God is greater than our heart.

That is a statement about jurisdiction. There is a court, and it is issuing findings, and it is not the highest court, and the higher one has already ruled.

You are under a verdict from a higher bench than the one inside you. 1 John 3:20 names the heart's condemning and places God above it without arguing with it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which court he is actually standing in.

And then the second half, which people skip: and knoweth all things.

That is often read as a warning. It is not. Read it in context: your heart condemns you on partial information, on a bad afternoon, out of a memory that has been rehearsed until it is the worst possible version. God knows all things, which includes everything your heart is not weighing and everything it has got out of proportion.

You are known completely by the One who is greater than the voice that judges you. The written word gives God the higher jurisdiction and the fuller knowledge in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not the one passing sentence on you every time it comes to mind.

The honest half. The drop will happen again. Probably this week. It is fast, it is faster than you, and it is not going to be argued out of existence.

And I am not going to tell you the thing you did was nothing, or that God arranged it, because neither is true.

There is a part only you can do, and it is two sentences and the order matters. You say what your heart says. You say it plainly, because pretending it is not saying it has never worked. And then you say what God says. And you do not argue with either one.

The breakthrough

You have been arguing in the wrong court.

The voice inside you is not making a case, so it cannot be answered with one, and every attempt you make gives it another turn to speak. There is no version of that conversation that you win, and fifty years of people trying is the evidence.

You are ruled on by a court that is greater than the one in your chest, and it has already ruled. Scripture names the heart's condemning and puts God above it in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which finding actually stands.

So the drop comes again on Thursday. And it is not the highest court and it never was.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the gate with the view in front of you. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, delegated to you rather than achieved, which is why a man sentenced inside himself every week can speak with complete footing this afternoon. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and everything He knows that I do not is His to decide about.

  1. Court inside my chest, you are not the highest one and you never were. Scripture says God is greater than our heart and knoweth all things, so the sentence you pass every time it comes to mind is issued below a bench that has already ruled.
  2. Habit of arguing with it, in the name of Jesus you end. The written word does not tell me to reason with my heart, it puts God above it, and the Holy Spirit is not the one passing that sentence in me.
  3. Lord, You are greater than my heart and You know everything it is not weighing. I thank You that 1 John 3:20 puts the higher jurisdiction with You and says it plainly, and I am saying what my heart says and then what You say and arguing with neither.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
