He does his part and then it goes.
That is the shape of it. Whatever he makes leaves his hands and joins itself to other things made by people he has never met, and the assembled result goes out into the world and does whatever it does, and he finds out roughly none of it.
For fifteen years this did not bother him. It bothers him now.
It started with a conversation at a wedding. Somebody asked what he did, and he explained it in the short way, and the man nodded and said something entirely mild about how you never really know what any of it gets used for these days, and moved on to the food.
That was eleven months ago and he has thought about it most weeks since.
He is not accusing anybody. His employer is, as far as he can tell, ordinary: neither noble nor sinister, a place where people try to do a decent job and sometimes succeed. He has no evidence of anything. He is not sitting on a secret.
What he has is a permanent absence of information about the far end of his own work, and somewhere in the last year that absence stopped feeling neutral and started feeling like exposure. Like there is a bill somewhere with his name on it that he has not seen.
He prays about it and it does not go. He tries to reason about it and the reasoning goes in circles, because you cannot argue your way to certainty about things you have no way of knowing.
You may know that circle. Not a specific thing you have done. A general and permanent not knowing, that has quietly reorganized itself into guilt.

What the question is actually asking
There is a psalm that asks who can come up into God's presence, and then answers its own question, and the answer is shorter than people expect.
He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.Psalm 24:4
Read what is on the list. Hands. Heart. Not chasing what is empty. Not swearing falsely.
And now read what is not on the list. There is nothing here about the eventual use of the things you make. Nothing about the chain. Nothing about outcomes further down the line, or the character of institutions you are part of, or the far end of anything.
That is not an oversight. Clean hands in Hebrew is an image about what your own hands have actually done. It is deliberately close in. It asks about the thing you did, not the world your thing entered.
You are being asked about your own hands, and that is the whole of what the verse puts on you. Psalm 24:4 lists hands and heart and honest speech and stops there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a conscience on its own ground instead of letting it wander into a chain nobody can see.
I want to be precise, because this is the place where people get hurt in both directions.
I am not telling you that what happens downstream does not matter. It matters enormously, to God, and He is dealing with it, and He can see all of it and you cannot. What I am telling you is that you have been holding a length of chain that was never handed to you, and the holding has made you feel guilty without ever making anybody safer.
You are honest today, and honest today is a real and complete thing. The written word puts the question on the hands and the heart, and the Holy Spirit does not indict a man for the parts of a story he was never shown.
Here is the honest half, and I will not slide past it. Sometimes a person genuinely does know something, and that is a different conversation, and this is not that message. If you actually know something specific, then you know it, and you should take it seriously and take it to somebody wise who can see your whole situation, which this cannot.
But not knowing is not knowing. It is not a soft form of knowing. And a conscience that treats an absence of information as evidence against you will never be able to stop, because there is no amount of not knowing that ever resolves.
And there is a part in this only you can do, and it is small. The hands have to be actually turned over, and the words actually said, so that the thing you are responsible for gets named at its true size and the rest gets put where it belongs.
The chain was never handed to you.
You picked it up at a wedding eleven months ago, out of a mild remark by a man who then went to look at the food, and you have been holding it ever since as though somebody had put it in your hands and asked you to account for it.
You are responsible for your own hands and your own honesty, and that responsibility is real and it is bounded. Scripture asks about clean hands and a pure heart and stops there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a conscience honest without letting it become limitless.
So the not knowing stays, because it is going to. What goes is the verdict you have been reading into it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, hands up, at the start of the day. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, delegated rather than earned, which is why a man who cannot see the far end of anything can speak with full footing. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and everything downstream is His to decide and never yours to guarantee.
- Chain I picked up at a wedding, you were never put into my hands. Scripture asks for clean hands and a pure heart and lists nothing beyond them, so the far end I cannot see was never the thing I was being held to.
- Guilt made out of not knowing, in the name of Jesus you have no place in me. The written word puts the question on my own hands, and the Holy Spirit does not accuse a man for the parts of a story he was never shown.
- Lord, keep my hands clean in today's work and keep my heart honest in it. I thank You that Psalm 24:4 asks about what I do and never about what I cannot see, and I am turning my hands over now and asking for exactly that.
