Called By Name For The Bench

This message is for a woman who has spent eleven years waiting for a calling while doing the work in front of her, and has treated the work as the waiting room

She has been waiting eleven years for God to call her to something.

She would not put it in those words. She would say she is open. She would say she has always felt there is something He wants her to do and she has not yet had clarity about what it is, and she would say this calmly, because she is a calm person, and because eleven years teaches you to say a thing calmly.

Meanwhile she gets up at ten past six and does her work, which she is very good at, and which she has never once considered as a candidate.

That is the part I want you to see. In eleven years of asking what God is calling her to, the thing she spends the overwhelming majority of her waking life doing has never been on the list. It is the room she waits in. It is what she does while she waits to find out what she is for.

She has read books about it. She went on a weekend once. There was an exercise involving a sheet of paper divided into quarters and she filled in three of them.

And every Monday at ten past six she gets up and goes and does a skilled thing she has spent two decades getting good at, and comes home, and waits.

You may have your own eleven years. Something you are waiting to be told, and a life you are living in the meantime, and it has never occurred to you that the meantime might be the thing.

Called By Name For The Bench

Called by name, for this

Read who gets called here, and read what he gets called to.

And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.Exodus 35:30

Called by name. That is the strongest language Scripture has for it. It is the phrase used of prophets and of Israel itself.

And the very next verse says what he is called by name to do: to work in gold, silver, brass, stone and timber, and to devise the how of things.

So there it is. A man called by name by God, publicly announced by Moses in front of the whole nation, and the content of the call is a craft.

You are able to stop treating your work as the waiting room, because Scripture calls a maker by name for the making itself. Exodus 35:30 has the LORD calling Bezalel by name and the next line says what for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts that over a woman in a yard at ten past six.

I want to say something about the eleven years, because I do not think you have been foolish. You were told, somewhere along the way, that a calling is a thing that arrives and interrupts. That it comes from outside and redirects you. And that model exists in Scripture, and it happened to some people, and it is not the only shape.

Bezalel's call did not redirect him. It named what he already was and set it to work.

You have not been failing to hear anything, and the silence you have been reading as absence has never been that. The written word calls a craftsman by name for craft, and the Holy Spirit has been in the work you were doing while you waited for something else.

Here is the honest half, and it matters. This is not me telling you that your current situation is definitely God's plan for the rest of your life. I do not know that, nobody does, and a message that decides your future for you is doing something it has no business doing. Things may change. That is His to decide.

What is settled is this: the work in front of you today is not a holding pattern in the eyes of the One who called a man by name to make things. It is not the thing you do until the real thing arrives.

And there is a part only you can do. The name has to be said, and then the work has to be said after it, in that order, out loud, so that you hear the two of them joined for the first time in eleven years.

The breakthrough

The waiting room was a room you built.

Nobody told you your work did not count. What happened is quieter than that: you were given a picture of how a calling arrives, and your life did not match the picture, so you assumed the call had not come yet and you sat down to wait for it in the middle of doing the thing.

You are able to receive today's work as the thing rather than as the wait, and it has been the thing for eleven years. Scripture has God calling a maker by name for the making, and the Holy Spirit has been present in every one of those mornings you counted as the meantime.

So the getting up at ten past six stays exactly the same. What ends is the waiting inside it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the yard with the day ahead. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given to you rather than earned, which is why a woman who has been waiting eleven years for clarity can speak with full footing this morning. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and whatever He does with your years from here is His to decide.

  1. Waiting room I built for myself, you are not where God put me. Scripture says the LORD called a craftsman by name and then said what for, so the work in front of me this morning was never the place I sit until the real thing arrives.
  2. Silence I have been reading as an absence, in the name of Jesus you stop meaning that. The written word joins a name and a craft in two consecutive lines, and the Holy Spirit has been in every early morning I spent counting as the meantime.
  3. Lord, You call people by name and You say what for, and I am receiving today's work from You as the thing itself. I thank You that Exodus 35:30 names a maker for making and has it written down, and I am saying my name and then the work and starting.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
