Clean HandsMicah 6:8

Do Justly And Walk Humbly

This message is for a woman so scrupulous about whether her work is clean that the checking has become the thing making her unwell

She checks it. Then she checks it again. Then she goes to bed and gets up and checks it once more before anybody else is in.

Not for errors. She is extremely good and there are very rarely errors. She is checking for something else, and if you asked her to say what, she would struggle, and then she would say something like: whether it is alright.

Whether there is anything in it that anybody could ever be hurt by. Whether she has missed an implication. Whether some decision she made on Tuesday, that seemed entirely reasonable on Tuesday, will turn out to have been the wrong one in a way she cannot currently perceive.

She is thirty nine. She has been like this for about six years and it is getting slowly worse rather than better.

The awful part, and she does know this, is that the checking does not produce peace. It produces about forty minutes of relief and then the question comes back with a slightly different shape, and she checks again, and the relief gets shorter every year.

And she cannot stop, because stopping feels like carelessness, and carelessness is the thing she is most afraid of being.

Everybody around her thinks she is conscientious. She is conscientious. She is also unwell in a specific and unglamorous way and the two have grown into each other so completely that she cannot see where one ends.

You may know that desk. A conscience that has become a machine, and no way to switch it off that does not feel like a moral failure.

Do Justly And Walk Humbly

He hath shewed thee, and it is short

Here is one of the most quoted verses in the Old Testament, and I want you to count the items.

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?Micah 6:8

Three.

Do justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God. That is the list. And the sentence opens by saying He has already shown you, which means the content of it is not hidden and you are not required to work it out.

Three items, and the last one is about walking with somebody rather than about performance at all.

You are being held to three things, and they were shown to you rather than hidden from you. Micah 6:8 names the whole requirement in one line and stops, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person read a short list as short instead of as the beginning of a longer one.

Now let me name what has happened in you, gently, because you are not weak and this is not a character failure.

Your conscience has generalized. It started with a real and good desire not to harm anybody, and then it lost its edges, and a conscience without edges cannot ever return a verdict of clear, because there is always another angle not yet checked. So the machine runs, and it will run forever, because there is no state of the world in which it can stop.

Micah's list has edges. That is the point of it being three things. And notice that the third one is walk humbly with thy God, which is a relationship rather than an audit, and a person walking with somebody is not simultaneously producing an account of themselves.

You are already clear on the terms God actually gave, and the terms He actually gave are three lines long. The written word says He hath shewed thee and then lists them, and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a demand that has no floor.

Here is the honest half, and I want to be careful with it. Some checking is right and good and part of doing justly, and I am not telling you to become careless, and you would not do it anyway. This is not asking you to lower a standard.

It is telling you that the thing you are afraid of is not the thing you are actually doing. You are not on the edge of carelessness. You are about four hundred miles from carelessness, and the machine keeps telling you the cliff is right there.

And I will say one more plain thing, because this is a real burden and not just a thought pattern. If this has taken hold of your sleep and your body and your ordinary life for years, that is worth telling somebody who can actually sit with you. A doctor, a wise person who knows you. That is not a failure of faith. It is doing justly toward yourself.

The part only you can do tonight is smaller. Say the three, and then stop, and let the stopping be the action.

The breakthrough

The list is three items long and you have been reading it as infinite.

That is the whole thing. Not because you are foolish, but because a conscience that has lost its edges reads every boundary as provisional and every clearance as temporary. So the list you are working from is not God's list. It is a list with no end, and no one can be clear on it, which is why you never are.

You are inside a requirement that was shown to you plainly and has three lines in it. Scripture says He hath shewed thee what is good and then names them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person put down a demand that God never issued.

So the standard stays high, because it always was. What goes is the fourth item, and the fifth, and the one after that.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the desk with everything squared. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, which is why a woman who cannot get a verdict of clear out of her own head can speak these with complete footing tonight. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and whatever you have not thought of is His to decide.

  1. List with no end, you are not the one God gave and I stop checking against you. Scripture says He hath shewed thee and then names three things and closes the sentence, so the fourth item and the fifth were never His and never had to be met.
  2. Machine that cannot return a verdict of clear, in the name of Jesus you stop tonight. The written word puts a full stop after walking humbly, and the Holy Spirit has never once been the source of a demand with no floor under it.
  3. Lord, You have shewed me what is good and it is three things, and I am taking them as the whole of it. I thank You that Micah 6:8 makes the last one walking with You rather than accounting to You, and I am saying them now and stopping without adding anything.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
