Clean HandsProverbs 11:1

A False Balance And A Just Weight

This message is for a woman asked to do something that is not wrong and is not quite straight, and who has no language for the difference

She has been sitting with the pen for about twenty minutes and she has not written anything.

The task is not wrong. She wants to be clear about that with herself, because she has a tendency to catastrophize and she knows it. Nobody has asked her to lie. Nobody has asked her to hide anything. There is no line here that a person could point to and say: that, there, that is the line.

It is more like a lean.

The thing she has been asked to produce is accurate in every particular and it will leave an impression that is not quite the shape of the truth. And she knows exactly how it will land, because she is good at this, and knowing how a thing will land is most of what being good at it means.

If she says something she will sound difficult, and she will sound difficult about a thing she cannot name, because naming it requires a word she does not have. Not wrong. Not right. Leaning.

She has run through the options and they all end in the same place, which is that she does the thing, because everybody does the thing, and it is not wrong, and if she made an issue of it she would be making an issue of nothing.

And underneath all of that, quietly, is the part that is actually bothering her. It is not the task. It is that she can feel herself getting used to it.

You may have your own pen. Something that is technically fine and quietly bent, and no vocabulary for the difference, and a slow suspicion that the vocabulary is not the real problem.

A False Balance And A Just Weight

The oldest word for this

There is a sentence about weights and measures that turns up again and again in the Old Testament, and it is the closest thing Scripture has to a word for exactly what you are holding.

A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.Proverbs 11:1

A false balance is not a lie. Nobody said anything untrue. It is a set of scales that leans, so that every single transaction across it is very slightly not what it appears to be, and every one of them is defensible on its own.

That is the thing you have no word for. Scripture has had a word for it for three thousand years, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been putting it into your hands all week.

And look at the two things it says. The leaning scales are an abomination, which is very strong. And the true weight is His delight, which is warmer than most people expect. He is not merely satisfied by an honest measure. He takes pleasure in it.

You are holding something God has language for, and it is not nothing. Proverbs 11:1 names a leaning balance as its own category of wrong, distinct from a lie, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person recognize a lean without needing to prove a line was crossed.

Now here is where I have to be careful, and I am going to be, because I cannot see your situation.

This is not a verdict on the people you work with. I do not know them and neither of us is in a position to hand out an account of anybody's motives. Most leaning scales in this world were not built crooked by somebody wicked. They drifted, and everybody got used to them, which is precisely what you noticed happening in yourself.

And I am not going to tell you what to do about the task. I do not know your contract, your household, your obligations or your options, and a message that decides that for you is doing something it has no standing to do.

What is yours, and what is entirely yours, is your own weight.

You are able to keep your own measure true today, whatever anybody else's is doing. The written word makes a just weight His delight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person honest in their own hand without turning them into a judge of the room.

Here is the honest half. Keeping your own weight true may cost you something, and it might be small, and it might not be, and I am not pretending otherwise. And it may not fix anything at all beyond you. That is real.

But you already knew that the thing bothering you was not the task. It was getting used to it. And getting used to it is the one part of this that is happening entirely inside you, which means it is the one part you can actually settle tonight.

The breakthrough

Your own weight is yours.

That sounds small and it is the whole thing. You have been trying to resolve a situation, and the situation may not be resolvable, and the attempt has kept you at a desk with a pen for twenty minutes at a time getting nowhere.

You are able to be true in your own measure today, and that is a complete act and not a partial one. Scripture calls a just weight His delight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an honest hand possible inside a room you cannot control.

So the lean in the room may stay. What does not have to stay is the lean getting into you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where the work is. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, which is why a woman who cannot name what is bothering her can still speak with full footing about her own hands. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and what anybody else does is His to decide and not yours to arrange.

  1. Lean I have no word for, you are named in Scripture and I am not imagining you. The written word calls a false balance an abomination and a just weight His delight, so the thing I could not name has had a name for three thousand years.
  2. Getting used to it, in the name of Jesus you stop in me today. Scripture makes an honest measure God's own delight, and the Holy Spirit keeps my hand straight without making me the judge of anybody else's.
  3. Lord, keep my own weight true today, in the part that is actually mine. I thank You that Proverbs 11:1 calls a just weight Your delight and says it plainly, and I am naming my part now and keeping it straight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
