Clean HandsDaniel 6:4

They Could Find No Occasion

This message is for a woman who has kept one private line for years that nobody knows about, and has started to wonder whether keeping it in secret means anything at all

There is a thing she will not do, and nobody knows about it.

It is not dramatic. It is a small specific thing that she could do, that would be easier, that nobody would ever check, that several people around her almost certainly do without ever thinking about it. It would save her about forty minutes a week.

She has not done it for nine years.

And here is where she has arrived, standing in a staff kitchen with a kettle going, at forty three.

She has started to wonder whether it counts.

Not whether it is right. She is fairly clear about right. What she has begun to doubt is whether a thing kept privately, that nobody has ever noticed, that has changed nothing about the world and cost her about six working weeks over nine years, has any weight anywhere.

Because integrity, in every story she has ever heard about it, involves somebody finding out. There is a moment. Somebody is tested and stands, and it is seen, and it means something because it was seen.

Hers has no moment. It is forty minutes a week for nine years in a room with nobody in it.

And she is too sensible to want a moment. She would hate a moment. But without one she cannot tell whether she has been faithful or merely inefficient.

You may have your own forty minutes. Something you have quietly held for years, that has never been tested in front of anybody, and a growing suspicion that unwitnessed integrity is not integrity at all but a private habit you have been unable to break.

They Could Find No Occasion

The whole defense was that there was nothing

Here is a sentence about a man his enemies were actively trying to bring down, and it is one of the highest compliments in Scripture.

Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.Daniel 6:4

They looked. That is the situation. Motivated people with access went looking specifically for something, and the account of what they found is: nothing.

Now notice what that sentence actually proves. It proves the existence of years and years of unwitnessed decisions. Every quiet thing he did not do, in rooms with nobody in them, on days when nobody was looking, is what produced a search that came back empty.

Nobody watched those years. That is why they were worth anything when somebody finally did look.

You have nine years of unwitnessed faithfulness, and that is exactly the kind Scripture treats as real. Daniel 6:4 records a search finding nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a person that the empty search is made out of a thousand invisible mornings.

Here is what I think has happened to you, and it is very common and nobody says it out loud.

You have absorbed a story shape in which integrity requires a witness, because every account you have heard has one, because stories need a scene. And so nine years of holding a line in an empty room has begun to feel like a thing that did not happen.

It happened. It is the only kind that ever happens, actually. The scene in the story is the visible top of something that was built entirely out of unseen days.

You are faithful in the ordinary sense of that word, and it has never depended on anybody noticing. The written word makes an empty search the evidence of a life, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those forty minute decisions whether or not a single person knew.

The honest half: nobody is going to tell you this at work, and there is not going to be a moment, and I am not going to promise you one. It may genuinely stay invisible for the whole of your working life. That is what this kind of faithfulness is.

And I am not going to tell you anything about the people who do the thing you will not do. I do not know their situations and neither do you, and this is not about them. It is about your own hands and what they have quietly held for nine years.

There is a part only you can do. The thing has to be said out loud, once, and named for who it is actually for. That is not to make it count. It is so that you hear yourself say the true reason instead of quietly forgetting it.

The breakthrough

The witness was never the point.

You have been quietly grading nine years against a story shape that requires an audience, and finding your own faithfulness thin because nobody ever walked in. Nobody walking in is the condition, not the flaw.

You are being seen in the empty room, and you have been seen there for nine years. Scripture makes a search that finds nothing the proof of a whole life, and the Holy Spirit has been the only witness those forty minutes ever needed.

So the line stays where it is, and the doubt about whether it counts goes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen with the kettle going. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given to you rather than earned, which is why a woman whose whole integrity has been invisible for nine years can speak with full footing. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and whether anybody ever knows is His to decide.

  1. Doubt about whether a private line counts, you are not the measure of nine years. Scripture makes an empty search the evidence of a faithful life, so the forty minutes a week nobody has ever noticed were the very thing that would have been found had anybody looked.
  2. Story that says integrity needs a witness, in the name of Jesus you go. The written word builds a whole account out of unseen days, and the Holy Spirit has been the witness in every empty room I have ever held this in.
  3. Lord, this line is for You and it has always been for You. I thank You that You count what nobody sees and had written down a search that came back with nothing, and I am saying it out loud now and going back to work.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
