Craft ConsecratedExodus 31:6

Wise Hearted

This message is for a man who works with his hands and has always felt crude and unlettered beside the people at his church who work with words

He left school at sixteen and he will tell you so within about four minutes of meeting you, and he will say it lightly, and it will not be light.

He is fifty three. He has run his own small outfit for nineteen years. He can look at a job and tell you, within about eight per cent, what it will cost and how long it will take, and he is right so often that the people who employ him have stopped getting second opinions.

At his church there is a house group. Good people. He goes.

And every week there is a moment where somebody says something about a passage, and it is a real observation, and there is a small silence afterwards while people think about it, and he sits there with a mug and does not have one of those.

He has never once said this out loud. He would be embarrassed. But he has carried the same sentence about himself since he was sixteen: that the thinking is done by other people, and that he is the practical one, the one you ring, and that God has presumably arranged things that way and it is fine.

Nineteen years of estimating a job to within eight per cent in his head, and he calls himself not clever.

You may have your own house group and your own mug. There is a room where you have decided you are the one without the thinking, and you have decided it on the evidence of what kind of thinking happens to be visible in that room.

Wise Hearted

What God put in them

Read this and watch which word God uses.

And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee.Exodus 31:6

In the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom.

Wisdom. That is not a word Scripture throws around. It is the word for the deepest kind of knowing there is, and here God is using it about people whose entire function in the passage is to make things. Cut, cast, weave, join, fit.

And note where He puts it. In the heart. Not in the vocabulary, not in the argument, not in the ability to say the interesting thing in a house group. Wisdom in the hands is still wisdom, and God is the one who named it.

You are carrying wisdom that God put there Himself, and He used that exact word for it. Exodus 31:6 says He put wisdom in the hearts of the ones who would make, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page about a tent and lays it on a man on a tailgate with a flask.

Now think about what you actually do.

You look at a thing and you know. Not because you worked through it in words. Because nineteen years of looking has built something in you that arrives faster than language and is right. You cannot explain how you knew and that is not a weakness, that is what expertise is when it has gone all the way in.

Words are one shape that knowing takes. They are not the only shape and they are not the highest one. In the house group you are watching one kind of knowing being performed out loud and concluding you do not have any.

You are not the one in the room without the thinking, and you never were. The written word calls the ability of makers wisdom and says God put it there, and the Holy Spirit has been the steadiness under nineteen years of getting it right within eight per cent.

The honest half: nobody in that room is going to translate this for you, and the moment will happen again next week, and you will still not have the sentence. That does not change on the basis of a verse. What changes is what you conclude about yourself in the silence afterwards.

And here is a thing worth knowing. In that same passage, God does not rank them. Bezalel and Aholiab and the wise hearted are named alongside each other and set to work. The ranking is ours.

The breakthrough

The room was never measuring what you thought it was measuring.

You have spent thirty seven years watching people put knowing into sentences and concluding that you do not have the knowing. You have the knowing. It comes out of your hands and your eyes and a number you can produce in about four seconds that turns out to be right.

You are wise in the word Scripture uses for it, and it was put in you rather than picked up. Exodus 31 says God put wisdom in the hearts of the makers, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells you that on a tailgate at the end of a day where nobody in the room said it.

So the mug stays and the silence stays and the sentence about yourself goes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the tailgate or in the cab before you drive. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, delegated rather than achieved, which is why a man who left school at sixteen has exactly the same footing here as anybody who can say the interesting thing in a house group. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and the outcome is His.

  1. Sentence I have carried since I was sixteen, you are not God's account of what is in me. Scripture says He put wisdom in the hearts of the ones who make things, and you have called me the practical one for thirty seven years without ever having the right word for it.
  2. Silence after somebody says the clever thing, in the name of Jesus you stop being a verdict on me. The written word puts wisdom in the hands of makers, and the Holy Spirit has been in nineteen years of knowing a job in four seconds and being right.
  3. Lord, the wisdom in my hands is Yours and You put it there. I thank You that Exodus 31:6 uses that word about makers and never once ranks them under anybody, and I am holding my hands up now and taking Your word over mine.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
