Able To RestGenesis 2:2

He Rested From All His Work

This message is for a man who believes the thing will fail if he stops watching it, and has not properly stopped in four years

Four years, and he has not properly stopped in any of them.

Holidays, yes, technically. He goes. He checks. There is always a point in the second evening where he checks and finds nothing and checks again the next morning anyway, and his wife has stopped commenting on it.

The belief underneath is not stated, because if you state it out loud it sounds absurd, and he knows that, and stating it has not removed it.

The belief is: it holds together because I am watching it.

Not that he does the work, which is true. That his attention is a component. That if the attention were withdrawn for long enough, some slow drift would begin, and by the time anybody noticed it would be somewhere bad.

He has no evidence for this. He has four years of evidence against it, actually, because he has stopped several times for a day or two and nothing has ever drifted anywhere.

Evidence has not touched it, which tells you what kind of belief it is.

You may know that gate. Something you have never left entirely unwatched, and a conviction about what would happen if you did, that has survived all the evidence you have.

He Rested From All His Work

He stopped, and it held

Here is the oldest picture of rest there is, and the thing to notice is who is resting.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.Genesis 2:2

He rested from all his work.

Not because He was tired. Not because He had done what He could and the rest would keep. He finished, and He stopped, and the whole of creation did not require His continued attention in order to remain in existence.

And notice how the sentence is built. He ended his work. Then He rested from it. Ending and resting are joined, and the resting is not an abandonment of the thing, it is the recognition that the thing is now standing.

That is the picture your belief has never had.

You are not the component that holds it together, and God Himself demonstrated stopping over finished work. Genesis 2:2 has Him resting from all his work rather than continuing to superintend it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts that in front of a man who has not stopped in four years.

Now let me name the belief properly, because you were nearly there.

You have fused two things: being responsible for something and being load bearing under it. Responsible means it is yours, that you answer for it, that you act when it needs you. Load bearing means it collapses without your continuous presence.

You are the first. You are not the second, and there has never been an hour when you were.

You are responsible without being load bearing, and those two have never been the same thing. The written word shows finished work standing without continuous superintendence, and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a belief that has outlived four years of evidence against it.

The honest half. I am not going to tell you how much to work, or to take a holiday, or to delegate, because I cannot see your situation and any of those might be wrong for it.

And I am not going to tell you that nothing will ever go wrong while you are not looking. Things go wrong. They go wrong while you are looking too. What is not true is that your attention is the thing preventing them.

There is a part only you can do, and it is an experiment rather than a decision. One thing. Entirely unwatched. For one evening. Chosen deliberately, and not checked, so that you find out what your belief actually predicts and what actually happens.

The breakthrough

Responsible and load bearing are two different things.

You have had them fused for four years, and the fusion is why evidence does not reach the belief: every time nothing goes wrong, your attention gets the credit, and the belief survives its own disproof.

You are held responsible without being the thing that holds it up, and God rested over work that was finished. Scripture has Him ending the work and resting from all of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man test a belief instead of arguing with it.

So the responsibility stays, because it is genuinely yours. And one thing goes unwatched tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the gate with the lights coming on below. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, delegated to you rather than achieved, which is why a man who has not stopped in four years can speak with complete footing this evening. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and what happens while you are not looking is His to decide.

  1. Belief that my attention is a component, you have survived four years of evidence against you. Scripture has God ending His work and resting from all of it, so finished work stands without continuous watching and always has.
  2. Fusion of responsible and load bearing, in the name of Jesus you come apart tonight. The written word joins ending and resting in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a conviction that gets credit every time nothing goes wrong.
  3. Lord, You rested from all Your work and it stood, and I am leaving one thing unwatched under that. I thank You that Genesis 2:2 shows You stopping over something finished rather than telling me to try harder, and I am picking one thing now and not looking at it tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
