Other Men Labored

This message is for a woman who has just handed over a finished piece and cannot bear that it now belongs entirely to whoever has it

It is wrapped and it is by the door and it goes tomorrow.

And she is standing in the room at seven in the evening not able to leave it alone.

She has done this many times. It does not get easier and she has stopped expecting it to. There is a particular quality to the last night, when a thing is finished and still in the room and still hers, and tomorrow it will not be, and after tomorrow whoever has it will do whatever they do with it and she will not be consulted about any of it.

They might not look after it. They almost certainly will not understand which part was hard.

That is the specific thing, if she is honest, and it sounds petty when she says it and she says it anyway: nobody who receives it will know which part was hard. They will see the whole and it will look like one thing, and the two weeks in the middle of it that nearly finished her will be completely invisible in the finished object, because that is what finishing means.

So it goes out into the world carrying none of the making, and it stops being hers, and the room is empty tomorrow.

You may know that last night. A finished thing, still in the room, about to stop being yours, and no way to send the making with it.

Other Men Labored

One labors and another enters in

Here is something Jesus says to His disciples, and I want you to notice that He states it as a simple arrangement rather than as a hardship.

I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.John 4:38

Other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.

That is the whole architecture of made things and it is being described without complaint. Somebody works. Somebody else comes in afterward and receives the benefit without any of the cost. And Jesus does not present this as an injustice to be corrected. He presents it as how things are arranged.

And notice who He is talking to. He is telling the disciples that they are the ones entering in. They are on the receiving side of somebody else's labor. He is not consoling the laborers, He is informing the recipients.

You are inside an arrangement Christ describes as ordinary, where the labor stays with the laborer and the benefit travels. John 4:38 separates the one who labored from the one who enters in without treating it as a wrong, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman release something without releasing what it cost her.

Here is the part that matters for tonight, and it is a small distinction that changes everything.

The thing travels. The labor does not.

You have been experiencing tomorrow as though the whole of it goes: the object and the two weeks and the part that nearly finished you, all of it out of the door and into somebody's hands who will not know. But that is not what happens. What goes is the object. The labor is not in the object. It was in you, and it stays in you, and it is known.

You are keeping everything the object was never able to carry. The written word says other men labored and ye are entered into their labors, and the Holy Spirit was present for the two weeks in the middle that the finished thing shows no sign of.

The honest half: they will not know which part was hard. You are right and it will not change, and any explanation you attached would be worse than the silence and you know it.

And I am not going to tell you that they will look after it. They might not. That is a real loss of control and it is the price of finishing anything.

There is a part only you can do, and it should be physical, because your hands are the ones that will not let go. You put it down, or hand it over, and you say one sentence while you are doing it. Not afterwards. While.

The breakthrough

The object goes. The labor stays.

You have been bracing for tomorrow as though the whole thing leaves, and it does not. What leaves is a finished object which by definition cannot carry any evidence of its own making. Everything that made it hard is not in it and never was, and it is not going anywhere.

You are keeping the two weeks, and they were never in the parcel. Scripture separates the one who labored from the one who enters in and calls that an arrangement rather than a theft, and the Holy Spirit was in the four days you had to undo twice.

So they will not know. And you are not losing what they cannot see.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the room with it by the door. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, which is why a woman on the last night of something can speak with complete footing this evening. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and what anybody does with it afterwards is His to decide.

  1. Feeling that the whole of it goes tomorrow, you are wrong about what is in the parcel. Scripture says other men labored and ye are entered into their labors, so what travels is the finished piece itself and the making was never inside it.
  2. Grief that nobody will know, in the name of Jesus you lose your weight, and the part that was hard stays with me and does not go out of that door. The written word treats the split between the laborer and the one who enters in as an arrangement, and the Holy Spirit was there for the four days I had to undo twice.
  3. Lord, the making stays with me and this is Yours, and I am letting go of it while I say so. I thank You that John 4:38 calls this an arrangement rather than a loss, and I am putting my hands on it and taking them off and letting it go tomorrow.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
