There Is Therefore Now No Condemnation

This message is for a woman who was blamed publicly for something that was genuinely hers, and has been walking into rooms differently ever since

It was said in front of eleven people and it was true.

That is the part she has never been able to get any leverage on. If it had been unfair she would have had something to push against, and she would have been angry, and anger would have carried her somewhere. It was accurate. She had done the thing and the person who said it was not being cruel and was, in the ordinary sense, correct.

Nobody in that room has mentioned it since. Some of them have been noticeably kind to her, which is worse.

And now she walks into rooms differently.

She could not have described it for the first few months. It is not that she is afraid. It is more like she enters as a person with a footnote. She sits slightly further back. She waits longer before speaking. She has become very good at agreeing.

Nine months, and she does not think anybody has noticed, and she is not sure whether that is a relief.

She has thought about this carefully and here is where she gets stuck. She cannot ask anybody to say it is fine, because it was not fine, and asking would be asking them to lie. There is no correction available, because the thing said was true.

You may know that room. Something accurate said about you in front of people, and a footnote you have carried into every room since, and no way to have it removed without asking somebody to lie.

There Is Therefore Now No Condemnation

The sentence starts with therefore

Here is a verse people know, and the two words at the front are the ones that do the work.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

Therefore.

That word points backwards. Everything in the chapters before it, the whole long argument about what a person cannot do for themselves and what Christ has done, is behind that word. The no condemnation is a conclusion, not an opinion. It follows from something.

And then: now. Not eventually. Not after enough time has passed for people to forget.

And condemnation is a legal word. It is the sentence handed down after a finding of guilt. Which means it does not apply to people who were innocent. It applies to people who did the thing.

You are standing under no condemnation, and that is a conclusion rather than a kindness. Romans 8:1 puts therefore at the front and now in the middle, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a verdict to a woman who has been carrying a footnote for nine months.

Now let me name the trap you are in, because you described it precisely and it is a real one.

You cannot get relief from the room, because the thing said was true, and the only thing the room could offer would be a lie. You are right about that and you should not go looking for it.

But you have concluded from that that no relief is available anywhere. And that does not follow. The room could only ever have offered you a false verdict. Somewhere else a true one has been handed down, and it is not that you did not do it. It is that there is no condemnation.

You are cleared on the record that actually counts, and you did the thing, and both of those are true at once. The written word uses a legal word about people who are guilty and clears them anyway, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been putting a footnote on you at the door of every room.

The honest half. Nobody is going to raise it. It will not come up again, and the eleven people have mostly forgotten and the ones who have not are not thinking about it the way you imagine.

And I am not going to tell you it was not your fault, because it was, and you have never pretended otherwise, and that is to your credit.

And I am certainly not going to suggest that God arranged that moment in front of eleven people to humble you or to teach you something. He did not. That is not in the text and it is a cruel thing to hand somebody.

There is a part only you can do, and it should be done with your feet, because this lives in doorways. You walk into a room on purpose. And you say one sentence before you cross.

The breakthrough

The room was never the court.

You have been serving a sentence handed down by eleven people who were not sitting as a court and never claimed to be, and who have almost all forgotten they said anything. And you have been unable to appeal it because the finding was correct, and you are too honest to ask anyone to pretend it was not.

You are cleared where clearing actually happens, and the clearing does not depend on anybody in that room saying anything. Scripture puts no condemnation on people who are in Christ using a legal word about the guilty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads out a verdict in a woman who has been waiting for a lie instead.

So the thing said stays true. And the footnote comes off.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the room or just outside it. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given to you rather than earned, which is why a woman who did the thing she was blamed for can speak with complete footing today. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and what anybody in that room thinks now is His to decide about.

  1. Footnote I carry into every room, you were never handed down by a court. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation, and eleven people in a room had no authority to sentence me and were not trying to.
  2. Habit of sitting further back and agreeing, in the name of Jesus you end today. The written word uses a legal word about the guilty and clears them, and the Holy Spirit is the one reading that verdict over me at the door.
  3. Lord, there is now no condemnation and I am walking in under that rather than under what was said. I thank You that Romans 8:1 clears people who actually did it and puts therefore at the front of the sentence, and I am crossing the threshold now and sitting where I used to sit.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
