Four minutes. She could give you them second by second.
What she said. What she did not check. The face of the person opposite her at the point where they realized before she did. The exact moment she understood.
That was five months ago and she has run those four minutes most nights since, usually between one and two in the morning, and the replay is always the same and always ends in the same place.
She has tried to work out what it is doing. It is not producing new information; she has had every conclusion available on about night eleven. It is not solving anything, because the thing is done and the consequences have already fallen where they fell.
She thinks, if she is honest, that some part of her believes that if she runs it enough times it will come out differently. Not in reality. In her. That there is a version of the review that finally releases her, and she has not found the right one yet, and so she keeps looking.
Five months of looking for an exit inside a loop that does not have one.
And the tiredness has become its own problem now, and the tiredness makes the loop worse, and she can see the shape of that and cannot get out of it.
You may know those four minutes. A replay that is not gathering information and not solving anything, that you keep running because some part of you is waiting for a version that lets you go.

Written from inside actual ruin
Here is a sentence from the middle of a book of poems written after a city was destroyed. That matters, because it is not a cheerful book and this is not a cheerful line dropped into an easy life.
It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23
New every morning.
Not renewed, which would imply the same stock topped up. New. Fresh mercies, arriving with the day, not drawn from a reserve that could run low.
And the word before it is the crucial one: we are not consumed. That is the language of somebody who understands that being consumed was a live possibility. This is not written by a man who thinks it was not that bad. He watched it be that bad.
You are meeting a mercy that arrives fresh with tomorrow rather than one you have been drawing down since March. Lamentations 3:22 makes the compassions new every morning in a book written out of genuine ruin, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings tomorrow's supply rather than issuing you the remainder of an old one.
Now let me name what the replay is actually doing, because you have nearly got it yourself.
It is looking for a version that releases you. And the reason none of them work is that release is not something a review can produce. No amount of examining an act has ever forgiven anybody of it. That is a different kind of transaction altogether, and it happens by being given rather than by being reached.
So the loop is not a fault in your character. It is a search being run in a place where the thing is not kept.
You are being given something that no amount of reviewing could ever have found. The written word makes the mercies new each morning rather than earned each night, and the Holy Spirit is not the one keeping you awake looking.
The honest half. I am not going to tell you it was not that bad or that nobody minded. Something happened and there were consequences and you know exactly what they were.
And I am not going to tell you God arranged those four minutes to teach you something. He did not. That is a cruel idea that gets handed to people in exactly your position and it turns a failure into a curriculum, and it is not in the text.
There is one more plain thing, and then the small part that is yours. If five months of this has taken your sleep and your appetite and your ordinary life, please tell somebody who can sit with you properly. A doctor, or a wise person who knows you. That is not a lack of faith. It is a reasonable thing to do about a real load.
And the small part: one sentence, about tomorrow morning, said before sleep, without reviewing the day first. The order is the whole exercise.
The loop is a search in the wrong place.
You are not weak willed and you are not indulging anything. You are running a genuine search, for a genuine thing, in a location where that thing has never been kept by anybody, and so the search returns nothing and starts again.
You are receiving mercies that come new with the morning and are not drawn from anything you have used up. Scripture makes the compassions new every morning in a book written out of ruin, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a fresh supply to a woman who has been awake looking for an old one.
So the four minutes stay what they were. And the search can stop, because the thing was never in there.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud sitting up in the dark. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, given to you rather than earned, which is why a woman who has not slept properly since March can speak with complete footing at two in the morning. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit makes it live, and everything that followed those four minutes is His to decide about.
- Four minutes I have replayed since March, you do not hold what I have been looking for. Scripture says His mercies are new every morning, and release was never a thing a review could produce however many times I ran it.
- Search running every night between one and two, in the name of Jesus you stop. The written word puts the compassions fresh with the morning rather than earned in the dark, and the Holy Spirit has never once been the one keeping me awake looking.
- Lord, Your mercies are new tomorrow morning and I am going to meet them there instead of hunting for them tonight. I thank You that You said it in a book written out of real ruin and not out of an easy life, and I am saying one sentence about the morning now and lying down.
